Vowel epenthesis, acoustics and phonology patterns in Moroccan Arabic

چکیده
In Moroccan Arabic it is widely accepted that short vowels are mostly elided, resulting in consonant clusters and consonant geminates. In this paper we present evidence from our exploratory timing study that challenges this widely accepted principle. We work with minimal pairs of singleton consonants vs. geminates (e.g. /bka/ vs. /b kka/) that reveals a presence of a vowel insertion between the clusters in word initial position in singleton cases. The length of the vowel insertion (epenthetic vowel) and silent pause of the stop consonant is greater than of a noise material. The epenthetic vowel is present in isolated words and in sentence context too. In this paper we also provide phonetic correlates in the minimal pairs between epenthetic vowel and lexical vowel, between singleton and geminate consonants, and contrast these with other Arabic dialect phonetic timing studies.

Vowel epenthesis in Japanese speakers' L2 English
This study investigated how vowel epenthesis, a typical suprasegmental error produced by Japanese learners of English, is realized in their speech production of L2 English. We investigated two aspects: (i) whether loanword epenthesis phonology in Japanese transfers to English speech production, and (ii) how learners’ English proficiency level affects vowel epenthesis. In Japanese loanword phono...
متن کاملCluster-Dependent Epenthesis Asymmetries
Anaptyxis-prothesis asymmetries, common in loanword adaptation and interlanguage phonology, are characterized by vowel insertion before sibilant + stop clusters, but into obstruent + sonorant clusters. I propose that such patterns reflect an epenthesis strategy in which the site of epenthesis is chosen to maximize perceptual similarity between input and output. Experimental evidence in support ...
متن کاملGetting your Gutturals out of the Mind: An Assessment of the Role of Phonology in the Patterns of Historical Gutturals in Modern Hebrew
In traditional accounts of Hebrew morphology, the primary basis of word formation is an underlying consonantal root and vocalic/prosodic template. However, many words in Modern Hebrew containing reflexes of historical gutturals deviate from the canonical form with regard to syllable structure, the number of surface root consonants, and the number and quality of vowels in the template. These dev...
متن کاملVowel-Epenthesis Patterns in Loanword Adaptation of Initial sC Clusters in Najdi Arabic
In this study, I investigate vowel epenthesis that arises in loanword adaptation in Najdi Arabic (NA), an Arabic dialect spoken in the middle region of Saudi Arabia. In addition, I present experimental data from NA, to advocate for the perception-based analysis of loanword adaptation, an approach early adopted by Fleishacker (2002). Based on acoustic and perceptual evidence, Fleishacker has fou...
متن کاملAbsence of Developmental Change in Epenthetic Vowel Duration in Japanese Speakers’ English
This study examines developmental change in the production of epenthetic vowels by Japanese learners of English in relation to acquisition of L2 English speech rhythm. Seventy-two Japanese learners of English in the J-AESOP corpus were divided into lowerand higher-level learners according to their proficiency score and the frequency of vowel epenthesis. Three learners were excluded because no v...
